  • There are two main areas of concern here. First, we need to make sure that your computer isn't storing a list of all of the pages that you've visited, without your knowledge. Second, we want to make sure that there isn't someone sitting between you and the internet isn't watching network traffic to see every page that you're visiting.

    Global History First, Your Computer

Do you use Netscape Navigator? If so, did you know that it keeps a list of EVERY webpage that you visit? Don't believe me? Try this. In your location bar, type about:globalhistory. Hit enter. Scary isn't it? (This has been dropped from more current verions of Netscape). Don't want your boss, spouse, parents, or friends to be able get a list of every place that you've visited? No need to fear. Getting rid of this list, and making sure it's gone for good, is an easy task.

History Zero All that you have to do is go to "Edit", and down to "Preferences". You'll see the entry depicted on the left. Set the "Pages In History Expire After" value to 0. Then, click the "Clear History" button. Your global history list is now gone, and it won't come back! Unless, that is, someone changes this value back when you're not looking..... Second, The Internet

Every time you access a website, a request is sent from your computer, to the webserver of the site you're trying to visit. That means, anyone sitting between you and the internet, could potentially be watching every where you go. This includes your boss, your school, or a malicious hacker. How do you stop this? By using a proxy that utilizes SSL. Basically, you visit a special webserver that encrypts, or scrambles, all of the data sent between you and it. The proxy then goes out on the internet, gets the page you requested, then sends it back to you via this encrypted connection. The most popular of these commercial services is called Anonymizer. Click on the banner to the right to find out more about it.
