  • Yes, it's possible to FireWall your desktop PC at home. It's probably a good idea that you do it, too. There are several such "Personal FireWalls" on the market, but the most popular by far is "Zone Alarm" by Zonelabs.

ZoneAlarm installs itself at the "network link layer", so that it can monitor, and block, offending packets, incorrect information or network attacks. ZoneAlarm can help to stop minor denial of service attacks such as: Ssping, Jolt, Teardrop, Tear2, NewTear, Land, Bonk, Boink, Puke, WinNuke, Dest_Unreach, UDP flood, Ping flood, OOBnuke, etc. (However, if your attacker is going all-out against you, there is very little that any "Personal FireWall" software can do for you. If you're experiencing repeated attacks of a massive nature, you may want to contact your ISP. There are things that they can do to help block the attack on their end.)

ZoneAlarm can also help you block access to resources running on your system, so that only users that you allow can gain access to them.

It is available in both a freeware version, and a professional version.
