I'm sure you've seen the 'trick' like the one in the pop-up window before (If you didn't see
a pop-up window, click here). Although
you usually see it presented to you as a 'trick', this information can, and most likely
is, used to keep tabs on you, and your surfing behavior. Advertisers will use that information, in conjunction with little preference files called cookies, to keep track
of what sites you visit so that they can present you with better "targeted ads". This information can be used to restrict access to sites, or to display alternative information based on who you are, what browser you use, etc. Don't like the thought of other people
knowing that much about you? See: How Can I Keep People From Seeing What Webpages I Visit? for information on how a Proxy can protect your privacy.
