Hackers have found that many companies, and individuals, will throw away information which is very valuable to their mission of bypassing security. Internal company memos which contain details about policy and security measures in place, hundreds of stickies filled with passwords and modem numbers (heh), and field manuals are all commonly found in corporate dumpsters. So, hackers came up with a pass time called "dumpster diving". Just as it sounds, the hackers will start going through the dumpsters of the company or individual of their choice.
How do you stop from throwing away valuable information? Simply throw it away in a form that isn't valuable to the person that finds it. In other words, buy a paper shredder. The "confetti" shredders are the best, because they cross-shred the paper, which makes it virtually impossible to be able to "put the pieces back together". If you have VERY valuable information, and are really concerned about throwing it away, even in confetti form, mix the shredded paper with water (paper mache!). Now, if someone dives into your dumpster, they'll find nothing but a gooey mess of paper pulp (Many military organizations, when dealing with top secret level materials, will actually incinerate it first, then mix the remaining ashes with water).
