Google builds a browser

Joshua Bloch, a senior Java developer at Sun, and four people from Microsoft's IE team have all joined the firm in the last few weeks, according to the New York Post. One of the four, Adam Bosworth, was also a lead developer in the development of Access.

Joe Beda, a developer working on the user interface for Microsoft's Longhorn, has also joined Google. His blog refers to the NY Post story, but does not give too many clues to his work at Google: "My only job now is to write code and ship product. That is about all I can say too :) "

Analysts also point to Google's hosting of Mozilla Developer Day for programmers working on the open source browser. Other observers believe the firm is likely to be working on a specialised music search - which could work like Google's image search.

Longer term, the firm could be looking at building a stack of applications that would mirror Larry Ellison's network computer model - an online resource accessed by a browser and a very simple PC.

As much as I like the sound of a google web browser, the LAST thing I want is for it to be ANYTHING like IE. Taking some guys from Microsoft might have been smart on paper and for obvious reasons, but I really don't want another version of Internet Explorer.

Google is definately moving to compete in everything a web portal does. Searching. Toolbars. Browsers. E-mail. News. Communities. Shopping.

They don't yet have the media hookups that Yahoo! has (Launch for example) but at least they are putting pressure on everyone involved. Before long, they may have an Instant messenging service. Or web site building. Maybe media and music like everyone else. Basically, look at what Yahoo! and MSN and maybe AOL have done, and imagine Google as that. I think that is their direction... And this browser thing is just convincing me more and more on this...

Not that it is a bad thing :p :D

Once Google has people using their email, instant messenger, browser, search engine, etc...

They will be able to gather / sell unheard of amounts of marketing information. And it all starts with that Gmail / Google cookie they put on your computer. That plus your demographic information makes Google immensely wealthy. They will easily be able to profile each and every user.

I honeslty don't think I care though. Google rules. If I wanted a big brother, I think I would want it to be Google.

LOL.. I hear ya Spyder.. but the rumor is that they'll do some javascript stuff and work with mozilla..
