Uh yea, are you asking if passwords are encrypted, or about network protocols, jeez this is a really broad question. answer can be anything from little ones and zeros to network routing.

Im pretty sure something like hotmail uses SSL for the login. Everything else is plain text.

When you log on the hotmail.com all AUTHANTICATION INFORMATION is sent in an encrypted connection and the protocol used here is SSL or secure socket layer.
A few seconds to late for that, wouldn't you agree?
thanks for the reply peopl....i jus found out.....there r a few sites tha sends passwords across the network in clear texts.......also telnet sends passwords in clear texts
Also FTP, SNMP v1 &v2, Pop3, SMTP and a host of other protocols. Play with Dsniff, Cain or Ettercap sometime, it is quite enlightening.
