Just a quickie....
I'm aware of products such as Net Nanny that will block inappropriate material when children are surfing the 'net, but I was wondering if anyone knows of other ways to prevent children from viewing harmful sites?

your firewall could block certain ip's / adresses..
and there are all kinds of ways u can filter the sites someone can visit..
filter for words (best) filter for colors (stupid thing my school once tried)..
umm if you mean are there other products try http://www.cyberpatrol.com
if you mean other than software nannyware - you can have a discerning adult sit with youngster while surfing.
you could make a user profile that restricts www pages acceptable to parent and blcoks others.
hope this helps but maybe I missed your question's intent :)
Besides watching them when they are on the 'puter?
You could always sign up for Websense. But I'd bet that'd be out of your budget range. Though, it works well for the enterprise.
I should have added that there are browser addons that allow you to set it or "family" viewing with passwords.
Thanks anyway but I found pages and pages of other software that will do the same job. WebAttack is a always a good place to look for freeware. I was just curious as to other obvious ways I may have over looked. Thanks for your replies..Quote:

if you are using IE (and prob some others) you can go to tools/internet options/content and enable ratings filters.
There are a couple of types..
One filters based on RSAC Rating system
This one isn't so good as it relies on websites to "rate themselves"
One filters based on allow/disallow rules that you set up...
not sure how effective or how easy it is to circumvent but there you go...
Cyber Patrol is a good one. IMO though. Surfing the net for kids should be a family experiance. Let the parents get involved. That way you learn, they learn, and you control the content. You hear horror storys all the time about kids turned loose on the internet. To many predators out there looking to victimize kids on the web. Besides it would take mosts kids about 10 minutes to circumvent or disable most nanny software. Kids are smater than they let on. My daughter is nine and can do a web page. The things kids learn in school today is nothing like most of us could imagine. A large number of them can work a computer like a fine tuned sports car. So nothing beats good old fashioned parental supervision. :D
A great filtering place is iExalt. They have a proxy server that is server side based and is updated statically from their list of banned sites as well as filtering dynamically as a website loads. Their service is $4.95 a month. They have software that can lock the proxy in and can only be unlocked by using the right password.
if you really concerned, theirs isp's like the christian network that make all the "appropreate settings" in their proxy for you. including news groups and mail, all for the price of your internet connection(under $20).
of course the parents can always moniter their kids like their supposed too.

LOL...No thanks. We'll just leave Jesus out of this!Quote:

Only someone without kids would say that. Anyone with kids knows it's just not possible. It's like Communism. Fine in theory but a little difficult to put into practice...
Anyway, I appreciate evreyone's replies.....
A double post to finish off. Fantastic....
Kids don't get enough credit these days. Are we talking about protecting an innocent kid from something he doesn't know exist or from something he might want to check out? Cause if this kid wants to, he can figure out how to disable protection.
Example: My not very computer-savvy neighbor wasn't yet in 6th grade before he had stolen his dad's AOL account that had the protection settings for the whole family in order to disable the settings and go look at porn.
How hard would it be to close something as NetNanny either?
What are you talking about? You think that a 7 year old boy is naive because he doesn't know about "deep anal action" or "The best of beastiality"....Come on now....Quote:

You can always use a firewall box or hardware router / firewall and block certain sites / IP's
Or you can edit your lmhost file... enter the IP's you don't want them to visit and reroute them to a local 'warning' page. However this method would be very time consuming cause you have to know the forbiden sites yourself, edit the lmhost file. ;)
Perhaps a good talk with your kids is a better solution. Make clear agreements, and trust each other. Perhaps this is naive but it teaches responsibility, still a filter could be usefull cause the 'dirty' pop-ups show up at decent sites too. (IMHO)
My mistake, horrible word choice. But I was wondering what age group we were talking about protecting. Cause the terms all come when you get out of elementary school and that's when NetNanny, etc. becomes useless.

That's kinda what I was looking at, although it's alot of work. There's a hell of alot of IP's out there that would need to be blocked.....
I've found a freeware tool that does what I want (for the moment!). It'll only be useful untill they discover the wonderful world of keyloggers though..
If anyone's interested it's called "WeWeb" and I found it at WebAttack.......
Thanks again.....
