Sorry I forgot to mention I am using the last windows 95 release which uses FAT32
Partition Magic is great at repartitioning drives. It's the software I've had the most luck with in the past. If you know someone with a copy that would let you borrow it, that would be best. If you can't get a free copy of it, I think it would cost like $30 or $40 to buy one. It would probably be simpler to just buy a new 20G hard drive for $50 or $60 and throw it in there with your old drive and dual boot the machine.
hey to install linux 8.1 just do the following and it will install onto your windows partition so you will not lose anything. I just did it this morning. I didnt follow the manual i did the instructions that were on the cd.
When it comes to the screen where it has the option to press F1, press F1 and at the prompt type in lnx4win and hit enter, it will do the rest for you. It is working great for me.
str34m3r has the right idea. You can't lose with PM. I've used it for a long time. It's a life saver. It's saved my butt and many of my clients over and over without any loss of data. It's well worth it's price.
I dont think that he needs partion magic, he said windows said it couldnt partition the hard drive. It doesnt have to, when he installs linux, linux will do that for him. All he has to do is specify the amount to reserver for linux and then the swap apce and he is all set.
DOH! scratch that last post, dummy me didnt read the original well enough =)
To bad Partion Magic doesn't support ext3fs. Or atleast the version I have doesn't
You're right. I have the latest version and it only supports ext2 and swap. But he can use it to resize his windows partition and not lose data. Then he can use the remaining free space for Linux and let Linux set it and format it for him. The next release of PM supposed to have that support. /me hopes.................Quote:

Cool Thanks. I will get a hold of PM. I would get a second hard disk but it would cost quite a bit for this old pc. I tried to use lyn4win for mandrake 8.1 like I had done with 7.0 but on my CD there is no Lyn4win file(they are the offical ones with the mandrake logo on) Which means when I type it in it does'nt work. I will have another look though
Anyway thanks for your help
