I have windows xp os, it is a dell inspiron 7500 laptop. i use it for book keeping. i forgot the login password, is there any way i can get on to it without messing up the hard drive. i need the information that is on there. i need to get on as soon as i can, and any information you may have will be much appreciated.
boot into safe mode and log in as administrator with a blank password...
then reset the password for the user account...unless of course you set a password for the admin account...then you can try one of these

the computor that i am attempting this on does not have the option to let me boot into safe mode.
To boot into safemode, tap F8 while the computer is starting up. This should give you a list of boot options. The top one will be safemode.
Edit:
Alternatively, you could try some of the options on this page:

Specifically this:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/austrumi/
Austrumi includes a utility called NT_Pass, which I have used several times to reset forgotten passwords for people.
thank you everyone, the problem is solved with no harm
Another way to access the data is to slave the drive into another machine

In case this happens in the future, one thing you can also do to prevent having yourself locked out of your Laptop, is to get one of those External USB Hard Drives.
I have an 80 GB USB HD that I can plug into any of my computers, back up my data, and then put it away. If you get one of these, you can do a complete back up of everything, and if you need the data faster than you can reset the password, you'd be able to at least put the drive on another machine, get it, and then do the password reset later on.
Might be of some help if you have more than the Laptop for your business. Also, the price of these drives is so low right now, that it won't cost a fortune like it would have a few years ago.
