Try booting into safe mode and try turning it on and running it then. If you still have problems, perhaps a re-install? What was the last thing you did before you noticed you couldn't turn on your AV software?
Uh.. are you using the Admin account? Have you tried logging out and then in as Admin and enabling it so that regular users either have access or setting it so that everything at least runs?
-
the last thing i noticed was it did a live update for viruses
-
I am afraid I do not know what is going on nor how to solve it, but I want this to be an example to others who read this post.
Far too many times have I seen Norton fail. From Antivirus in which so many viruses use encapsulated code specifically built to disable NAV, to Norton Firewall, which once again too many packets can simply be fragmented to by pass it. Across the board, and through the clients I 've worke for.... it's dangerous to trust in it.
I am afraid I don't know what to tell you, as I only used it for a few weeks. I suggest doing the usual:
1. http://housecall.antivirus.com - scan for viruses using a free, kick ass online virus scanner
2. http://www.google.com - search for "spybot search and destroy" - Run a spyware check on your computer
-
well i scanned with every single anti virus i got (avg 6.0, Norten Antivirus 2003, Houscall) all kinds of ad ware blocks and anit viruse scanners AND NOTHING WAS FOUND. the thing is going nuts, it wont let me do anything :( (such as turning it on all i can realy do is scan for viruses)
if norten never works whats another solution for a better firewall?
-
NIS 2003 gave me numerous networking problems until I finally ditched it. I don't remember, but I believe norton itself asks whether you want to password protect some of its functions, so I don't know whether or not logging in as an admin in windows will matter; you might have to start norton itself as a privelaged user (password-prompted, maybe??)
Anyway, there are lots of threads on the topic for free firewalls and av. Currently, I use avg for av and sygate for my fw. I have found the sygate to be configurable enough for me, and it has given me no problems (unlike norton) and avg updates almost daily, and very quickly when responding to new threats.

you coould always get a linksys or a netopia... linksys is cheap enough...
http://www.linksys.com/Products/prod...id=29&prid=561
Using NAT is a good way to close up ports
-
i have a linkys router and i did not password it and i thinck it was some of the ports that was enabled. im trying to get an very good firewall with not cost. Any one know???!?
-
is you can post a list of all the processes running on your computer
Try downloading pskill, pslist and fport:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/pskill.shtml
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/pslist.shtml
www.foundstone.com/knowledge/proddesc/fport.html
from a cmd prompt do: pslist -t >ps.txt then post whats on ps.txt
-
a fire wall is good try agnitum outpost but first reset your router to the default configuration and password protect it using a strong password of upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters (_~$) and fix your problem then install the firewall.
many av killers also kill personal firewalls
-
tedob when i used pskill or f-port the window keeps gowing down i cant see what it says.... whats the right command for entering it in cmd?
-
norton problems
The same thing happened to me Inotice that another program i had was have conflict with it
so I unistalled the other program and worked agian
please tell me what programs you have installed
:borg:
-
linksys comes default with all ports closed and a password...
reset like was earlier advised... Ive never needed to run a software firewall beyond that
'
-
to see it a screen length at "fport |more" or better still "anydos.exe >output.txt" then type notepad output.txt
you must have an XP box, i hate dos in XP
avenger_jcc the reason i say a person firewall is good behind a router is for the out bound alerts. a router doesn't tell you that.
-
ok well this is what i guess and what u whant i thinck but hears the ss
-
ok now pslist -t >ps.txt and copy and past ps.txt and post it
-
ok i still dont understand how to work it lmao for that other one i took a fast screenshot and i cant get pslist to show :( so how do u do it??
1)use cmd
2)type in pslist????
can u give me good steps lol
-
here lets make it simple. attached it a front end i made for these tools.
put it in the same directory as the other tools or any where if the tool are in system (fport, pslist and pskill). run it and click on ps_list. right click on the text select then copy. past in a post for here
-
the only thing i can say is go to control panel, then add or remove programs, then uninstall it, then reinstall it, It may work.
-
ok hear is F-Port plist

Linklogger does :)
it monitors and interprets linksys router (and other firewalls) incoming and outgoing logs:

wow thats kewl where can i find my info about my port from my ip and isp ?
-
ok i think we got a problem here:
1216 -> 5000 TCP
0 System -> 123 UDP
1216 -> 1112 UDP
we gota see if we can get a process name to kill. post the out put from pslist (ps_list) this usually will show things that are hidden from the task manager
-
ps_list is not working it keeps giving me an error thats its bieng used by another process :(
whats going on. and also are those ports u posted from hackers?
-
my guess is yes. their should be a process name in between the PID and the port its using and system doesn't use port 123. you can try telneting to them and see if there's an ftp server being run on one of them but it really could be anything on there
processes are hidden and the process lister doesn't work, strange ports being used.by 'system' an injection method of some type no doubt. you can try 'theCleaner' from moosoft.com their pretty good at getting rid of trojans and you could try an online virus scanner. if theCleaner doesn't do and online scans dont fix it id reformat. you can get a disk resizing util, i use partition magic but there's a few good one around. split your hard drive into two partitions and copy the files you want to keep onto the new (D) drive reformat and reinstall on C
-
lmao ok thanks bro ill try that cleaner from moosoft. and if it doesnt work ill reformat my c drive :) thanks
-
well i scanned with that cleaner and nothing showed up ??? is there a program where i can scan for bad ports that my computer is not alowed to use?? and also how do u telenet the port?
-
ok i reformated my c: drive and it fixed my msn problem and im not going to install nortan again. but now i have 1 more problems lol. when i formated my c: i saved a file to my d: and i cant access the exes and stuff in it. it says i may not have the appropriate permissions to access them. i made my self to be an admin but not sure if thats just it of what i have to do. i dont know why it keeps doing it :(
