Well the only plus with the old method is the DB would be a little smaller. But this doesn't seem to be a problem here so I implemented it.

If you keep things marked as "read" then you can just tab "new threads" and see whats happening now. This way you don't have to visit all the discussion areas to see the posts.
There are times when you know that a thread doesn't interest you by the title. Or you have read enough of the threads replies. Just mark them as read and they go away.
Well yes ... but if you were the sort of person who really wanted to see unread posts then it would be annoying to have the software mark them as read before you actually saw them. I can think of an example in moderating a forum. You have to see all new posts no matter how little they interest you, so having them flag up as new posts is particularly useful.
It was annoying. It was a 900 second cookie-based timer that started when you loaded the page logged in. Rather inefficient and I missed a lot of new posts myself that way. I have to peruse 30 forums during the course of the day so I usually just check the main page for new post icons. When I don't see'em, I assume there are none.
I can imagine it would be rather annoying, yes :D
