In my experience, Solaris is well suited for enterprise situations, but not the home environment. The hardware supported by Solaris is very small in comparison various Linux or BSD flavors. I have only started using Solaris recently (having been groomed in *nix environments with Red Hat Linux and AIX) and find it quite similar to AIX. If you don't want to spend the money to try it but want to get a feel for it, FreeBSD or OpenBSD will also offer you some insight into Solaris. I'm still in the process of learning Solaris and FreeBSD, though, so I probably can't give you as much help as someone who uses it in an enterprise.

FreeBSD is my home operating system, and I love it. it can be tricky at time, but pkg_add and ports are my true love
