My ex recently borrowed my laptop and I think he's spying on me cos I discovered a keylogger installed on my laptop.I confronted him yesterday and he denied it.Am also suspicious because he has been contacting my friends who he doesn't even know and has never met..via info that could have only been obtained if someone had access to my email account.What should I do?:confused:

Could you please let us know what Operating System you are using? also do you have access to another computer?
If you do then i would change all your passwords and secret questions etc just incase he has been able to capture login credentials. ;)
also if you have enough PC experience then i would recommend that you back up important documents, and format the laptop, and re-install your Operating system and make sure you have updated firewall and Anti Virrii and do regular scans. :)
Alternatively, ask a local computer shop to do what t34b4g5 had suggested if you are not confident yourself. It should not be all that expensive, but after all, are you willing to put a price on security and privacy?

I would immediately change all login credentials, but on another machine, or only after you are certain you have removed it. If he did in fact put that key logger on your machine, and you've logged into anything since, he undoubtedly has that info.
On top of everything that the others have told you, I would suggest making regular backups of your information. Keep daily backups for at least 3 days, weekly backups for at least 3 weeks, and monthly backups for at least 3 months.
This way, if your ex ever gets a hold of your laptop again, you can use those backups to restore to a point before he borrowed it.
You may also want to contact your local law enforcement agency and see what options you have. I would do this before you remove the keylogger and reformat the computer (just in case they need the evidence).
And most importantly, since he is your "ex" and you know that he may have done this this time (coincidence aside), don't ever let him use your stuff again. (Sorry for stating the obvious)

This is a fairly common thing. I can't even count the number of girls I know who think that an ex BF is harmless, even if they say things that throw up warning flags.
I've seen guys who were dumped, trying to do everything from constant phone calls, to things like this. I can't understand even a little how it is that a girl can think someone is harmless until it's too late.
PLEASE take this as a warning, and if you're anything like the girls I know, you'll simply say "Oh I can handle it" and whatever else those denial phrases ensue.
I don't understand why girls always think they can handle something, and that a guy actually understands that it's over. You're not helping yourself by letting him borrow your machine. And finding a keylogger?
He's probably trying to get into your email accounts to see if you're saying anything about him, or if you're seeing someone else.
This is classic stalker behavior, and you NEED to contact the police, and do everything you can, to keep him away. Most females don't seem to understand just ho far an ex will go, or how crazy love can make someone.

I think every guy here who's had a GF at one point could say that. We've all done stupid things for girls. And then we look back and think "Man, what was I thinking? I was acting totally nuts!".
I know I've done it. And I also have female friends who would say "Oh, I can handle him" or worse "He's harmless, I can handle it" which is stupid of course. Girls always want a guy to need them and then when they do, they call them a stalker, or worse, and once it's over a girl assumes ANY guy will just be over it and that's it. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted a little time in a dark alley with some of these asses who a girl said they could handle it.

I also entirely agree with the comment that girls want a man who needs them, but strangely once a man truly needs the woman, typically the woman loses interest..... truly ironic.

My question is, which Mac keylogger software is safe? I know that you can use this type of malicious programs, in my case, I installed it on my kids computer and want to make sure they do not open the door to intruders.

What do you mean by opening the door to intruders?
Are you wanting to view what website's they visit? View there regular webhabit's, maybe get plaintext passwords so you can snoop on what they view/do while online?
If your worried about them viewing certain content etc then you would be probably be better to setup web filtering via your router config page.
It is better to use a tool such as Net Nanny or the built-in Apple Parental Controls.
If your children discover that you are spying on them via a key logger, you will only make them suspicious of your motives.
install your own keylogger...you can buy hardware versions, the s.w versions are totally ****, imo. but if you're so paranoid you don't like your partner, a keylogger won't fix the problem..

I honestly don't think that you need a keylogger for the purpose you have in mind. Keyloggers are forensics tools not security ones. You want proactive, protective applcations such as HYBRID and ua549 are suggesting.Quote:

All a keylogger might tell you is that something bad has happened, by which time it is a bit too late IMO.
I think that the first move is to make children aware of the dangers of the internet, both to themselves and their computers. There isn't much point in antimalware applications if the users don't know how to use them.
Parental controls and web filters are useful but don't forget to make sure that the computer is in plain view in the living area ;)

Personally I don't like keyloggers except as a last resort because they gather way too much information that you have to go through.
Hardware keyloggers are pretty secure but they also tend to be rather obvious unless you get one built into the keyboard, not so easy if your machine is a laptop. They can also be removed at critical moments so they won't tell you what has actually been done. They are not normally detected by AV products.Quote:

Software keyloggers work but as they are installed on your system you need to make sure that they are secure and cannot be hijacked. Their major disadvantage would be that although you can set your local antimalware to ignore them, all someone has to do is run an online live scan and the game is up.
How old are these children anyway..............kids can be pretty cunning in my experience.

Just something for everyone to keep in mind, check your local laws before installing any type of keylogger, either software or hardware. In MANY jurisdictions keyloggers are per se illegal under wiretap statutes because they actively intercept wire communications.
If you're going to pull the ol' "This is MY box" route, you may need to notify every user that their usage is recorded. Thus giving them the opportunity to either consent (use the computer) or not consent (don't use it.)

I'm not a Lawyer or anything, so don't take this as free legal advice, however, something I did want to point out, is that here in the US, we don't have any language laws. I'm almost certain that there is some way you could use that to your advantage as well.
Now, in Canada, they have an actual law for Language, as they have two Languages that are "official" and so signs and laws have to be in English, and French. Granted you don't see a whole lot of French outside of Quebec, some parts of New Brunswick, and the Ontario Border towns, but it has to be there in some way.
In America, we don't have an actual Language that's set in any legal manner. That's why when you have to go to the DMV or whatever, you can in theory force them to give you the test, in ANY language you want, because we as a country, have literally NOTHING saying you have to learn English. I know of some Mexican people who've stated that they took tests and other docs they have to fill out in Spanish, and I know that I've personally seen things in Russian, Spanish, German, French, and a bunch of other languages.
So putting up a sign in another language the person doesn't speak, might be something you could "toy with" but, again, it may very well be BS. Anyway, it's just another angle I thought of.
The item I posted stood up in court on more than one occasion for a company I consulted at. IMO if the system that is being accessed is English only, one can argue that the user understands English.
