Normally I don't care about the reputation points. But when I get knocked for my avatar I have to ask; What is the reputation system really for? Is it for technical knowledge/opinions/views and being a good forum citizen or is it a cart blanch where people can just knock you for anything that grabs their fancy?
It's pretty much open to whatever the members want to use it for. There's no real way to police it. We may experiment at some point doing without it, if enough of the forum membership want to.

Wouldn't that "reputation" thing be a consequence of the previous antipoint system, such that when you get the greenies, it just builds up into a more positive reputation?
Not that it matters, personally.
When forum members exchange ideas, reactions, banters and all, a certain reputation is built up with or without the system since a forum member knows whether another is really seriously providing assistance or just talking others for a ride with a nonsense post (I hope this one of mine is not).
It really doesn't matter. I just found it amusing that someone took the time out of their day to give me a knock for the Buddy Christ.
The new rep system will leave room open for abuses. I say just lose it.
I don't think as much potential for abuse exists as did with the AP system. This system won't let you rate posts from the same member twice in a row, even. Maybe a forum poll would be useful in deciding the rep system's fate?
If that will help. Let the users vote, and since you are the boss, you can make whatever adjustments necessary to make these forums work.Quote:

I still believe that it has its defensive uses, given that we are a 24/7 International site. Sure we have a lot more moderators now, but they have other things to do, and the timezones can still be a pain?
I also believe that they have a useful function in allowing one to say "thanks" without apparently postwhoring (not that anything has ever inhibited me:D) and in encouraging starter members.

Yeah, the reputation system can be used only for "thank you" if you adjust the values to be meaningless, but then again, why do that when there is a PM system?Quote:

One downfall to that (in the past anyway I have not been posting here very much) is sometimes people ban users for the sake of the difference of opinion. That may have changed over the years, so I cannot say what things are like now.Quote:

Well on most of our forums we have it off. I think this is 1 of only 3 across the 30 we publish which has reps turned on.
I think all of the abuse that people are worried about was stopped with the AP system by making it not anonymous. When it was anonymous people would do all kinds of weird things with it. Once the receiving user knew who it was coming from I think the abuse stopped. If JPnyc, calling him just JP seems like a disservice to me, says he will be around to watch out for abuse then it really doesn't matter.
