Using Apple Tv with computer monitor via HDMI

So I got an apple tv as a gift!!! but have not opened it yet because I don't have an HDTV but what I do have is a Philips monitor with HDMI port. I'm wondering if it's possible to use the apple tv with my monitor or not.
You know if I open it I will have to reduce the price ...
I've read some stuff on google so I guess many people say it's possible ... my monitor has built in speaker as well BTW
but I would like to know what you guys think as well :D
