Can't start print spooler.

I am not sure what forum this should go under. I assume "Hardware" due to the fact someone can not install a printer.

Someone is having trouble installing a printer. He get an error saying something to the effect of:

"operation could not be completed. print spooler service not running."

It then asks if you would like to start it. When you click yes, nothing happens.

I did the whole:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
3. Double-click the Printer Spooler service, and then change the startup type to Automatic. This sets the Spooler service to start automatically when you restart the computer.
4. If you want to start the spooler service immediately, click the Start button under the Service Status field.

When I had him try that, he got the following:

"could not start printer spooler service on local computer error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start."

I have looked for info on this everywhere and have came up with nothing really.

You said he was installing it? Did he load the drivers?

He did install the drivers correctly. It's amazing how common this problem is. Just do a search! No one seems to have a fix though. Not even MS.

As far as the OS and Printer type...

Printer: HP (I don't know what model)
OS: XP Home w/ all Win updates.

Did he "harden" his system by shutting down any other services?

Make sure the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service is also running. The printer spooler depends on it.

Two things to do:

1) Open a Command Prompt window, type "net stop spooler" (no quotes), navigate to c:\windows\system32\spool\printers\
Once there, on the menu bar, click on Tools, Folder Options, View, put a dot in the radio button on the 9th item in that list "Show hidden files and folders", Click Apply, then OK,
now delete all files found in the ..spool\printers folder, if found. go back to command prompt and type "net start spooler". It might work now.

IF NOT,

Manually download the XP SP2 Service pack and reinstall it, probably your spooler file is corrupted.
