WiNDoWS XP and its Performance.

I have had a Windows XP beta for a while now. I am running it on a 600mhz intel celeron, with a intel i440bx motherboard. 128mb of ram voodoo 3500 agp 3d accelerated videocard (with tv capture abilities) and I run it in 1024x768 16bit video mode.

My machine runs POORLY. I scroll down in internet explorer on any website and I can see the page frame from top to bottom one frame at a time. Full Screen Video is extremely poor usually not passing more than five frames a second. I had to disable the fancy gui stuff that is new to xp. Keep in mind my pc ran SWEET in Windows Millenium.. Whats up? Is xp just junk? Oh ya.. I been running it like six months.. heh

XP is based on NT, so don't expect not to take a performance hit. On the other hand, though, you shouldn't be getting that much of a hit. First off, since it is just the beta, I'd get the real thing before you pass judgement on XP as a whole. Secondly, start with a clean install instead of upgrading your existing system. A system for 6 months will obviously have more problems than a new install.

ok well to explain the performance if you don't run a pentium 3 or 4 your not going to see it. I'm runnging 1700mhz and it performance is outstanding. It really utilizes the chip. I've been running XP pro for about a month the full version and so far I have no problems with it.

I would recomend getting at least a pentium 3 to see the XP performance.The speed on the internet has to do with all the files that are kept which I'm assuming that you know, try getting a cleandisk or sweepdisk from norton.That will really get your computer moving to.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm Lets see you spend at least $200 to $300 on XP and most likely most people don't have enough joice to run it so you have to up grade so that will cost you at least another grand so that will bring you to $1300 but thats just the processor you still need the mother board, the cooling fan, better get a liquid cooler :p, and then mabe you can run XP

on the other hand you could buy another box 'Intel will love you for that' and most new computeres start at $1500 Monitor and mouse included.Hhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm:confused:


And you gotta contact Microsoft to get it to work

I have an omnibook 6000, 650mhz 128 ram 8mb video memory, and let me tell you it sucked a$$. I worked so poorly with windows 98 that I was just about to sell it off on ebay. But yesterday I installed Win XP and let me tell ya, i'm keeping it for a bit longer ;-). Full screen video ran smoothly and its been running for over 24 hours without any problems. Don't get me wrong I'm not going to replace my linux boxs anytime soon, but this is defanently a step in the right direction for Microsoft. So my guess would be that your computer just dosn't run the beta well.

Live and let live. In AO there will always be hardcore Win and Linux fans it's just something we are gonna have to accept and move on. I personally don't use *nix because I'm afraid I don't have the patience or smarts to learn and use it, so therefore I take the easy route and use WinXP.

Now back to the thread topic. Microsoft recommends at least a 400mhz processor and 128mb of RAM for XP (which by the starting post you do have). Problem is that Celeron processors aren't worth the materials they are made with so they usually end up running about 100mhz slower than what they say they do. As far as the Voodoo card you are using it is kinda outdated considering that they have been out of business for awhile (not saying it's a bad card or anything). I'm running an Athlon 900 and 512mb of RAM with a Nvidia GForce 2 64mb of RAM (wonder if I'm a gamer?) and XP pro hauls some serious ass on my box. One suggestion would've been to complete install but someone beat me to it. Another way to add some speed is to run the services.msc command and turn off those you don't use as well as turn off system restore which eats up space.

I have a full cracked copy of XP that doesn't require registering that I got from a Micro$hite beta tester friend of mine. It hasn't crashed once on me (which is to be expected considering the NT frame). ME was an evil, evil peice of software. Yes, XP is also evil in the sense that it's extremely hard to get rid of, but so far XP is my favorite Windows update. There are a ton of cool features that add up to a pretty reliable platform. :p

i've been using xp build2600 for more than a month. i thought product activation will show up after a month? is this for real? or am i supposed to reformat again? hope not..

I think XP Pro is a quite solid OS. I have the following setup:

P2 300
192 MB RAM
Voodoo 3 vid w/ 16 MB Ram
6 GB HDD.

yeah, my system is rather old. But, I did a clean install of XP, and it runs like a champ. Clean install is the way to go...upgrading isn't going to cure any lingering problems.

So, if XP runs this well on a P2-300, I can't imagine what it runs like on a properly config'd P4.

It runs slow because of all the new and allegedly improved interface... wait... did I say interface? I meant headache... sorry...


Anyway, if you're not going to use Linux (I would if I had the time to work it out) stick with Win2k because the only true advantage of XP is 'protected mode' which most of you won't need anyway.

If you don't like the look of XP just change the display settings, so it uses the Windows 2000 style interface, or haven't you worked out how to right-click on the desktop yet?

I've always wondered if it is a pre-requisite to becoming l33t to slag off MS.
It's as though someone once published the "How to become a l33t h4x0r" check list and at the top of list was "In order to become a l33t h4x0r you must hate Microsoft."

The daftest thing about this topic is that evilseed bad mouths Microsoft with such a passion you can just see him shooting his airgun at pictures of bill gates, but he admits that he uses MS products. Then fiend says he agrees but can't get his head around Linux, so doesn't use it. What a cop out.
Here's some advice :
Try reading up on Linux, ask some questions on here in the Linux forum if you must.
Then when you are ready format your hard disk and install a copy of Linux on it.
There you go no more nightmares about having to use an inferior MS product.

On second thoughts, perhaps the daftest thing about this topic is that I even bothered to get involved in it.

so.. will microsoft really show my product activation after i've been using winxp for a month? i think i've been using winxp for more than a month. why didnt it showed up? i'm using winxp build2600. and if it did show up, where would i get a crack? :confused:

I have also experienced performance problems with XP, having got my XP Home with a fresh install on my 500AMD machine with 512Mb RAM, I have found it to drag and perform slowly compared to how it performed with 98 or NT4.
Even though it is a bit slow I will say however it is stable and generally I am happy, not with the firewall but that is another story.
I have set it up on a test machine and blasted it when finished I put in my Me boot disk and formatted the drive no problems and then installed Me again.

So my opinion is not perfect, but they are getting better.
If I had a faster machine I dont think it would drag so I will have to put up with it until I get something faster.

I have a few problems with xp. First why didnt they want their OS to support java. As one of the fastest growing languages, this seems like a stupid mistake on microsofts part. Next why does it not support ISA bus devices? My computer, which surpasses the requirements for XP, has two ISA slots one of which is used for my modem to free up a pci slot for a 3d video card. Finally I heard it doesnt support the new usb standards. This combined with high cost, and mandatory product activation sways me against this new product.

Preacher, XP Professional doesn't support ISA devices XP Home does. Problem is also that XP Pro doesn't want to support legacy devices (dos drivers and all) cause DOS isnt built in it just runs under emulation, XP Home will support ISA devices and legacy devices but XP Pro doesn't. And yes it does support the new USB (v2.0).

I have a 1.4 AMD with 512 Megs of memory ..... and I run XP just fine. Of course, I got rid of my BETA and my friend got me a Corporate Version so I don't have to worry about the authentication codes.

I never liked Windows 98 or 98SE - I always considered them poorly patched versions of 95B and 95C. Always had video driver problems, soundcard/modem conflicts, etc. Just a major headache.

I don't mind RedHat or Mandrake - but I really don't need that server power. Not hosting anything here, and I'm not all that "enthralled" with Star Office or Corel Office.

I like my MAC too though (G4) - it's the only thing I'd consider doing any graphics or video editing on. Windows and Linux - sorry. Neither of you do what the MAC can do in the graphics and video arena. Don't even come close, probably won't for some time to come.

I'm pretty non-committal (probably why I'm not married yet - who wants commitment?) - I use what's best for what I want to do. Being a Linux or Windows or a MAC bigot is narrow-minded and narrow-focused .... I'm open minded.

Hey evilseed, do you actually have XP or any problems with it at all? It seems to me that you've made this thread just to weed out all the windows lovers out there and then try to convert them to linux.

BTW my system uses an ISA sound card
and it runs great... Better than ME

But the following problems are cropping up
My older HP 7200 series burner is making coasters not cd's
and my desktop scanner will not work right...
Video is dimmer on my games.... I have to figure out that setting.
Lost Kodak Imaging...(grrrr!)
I have to go to every software MFG and get an XP update..
Bug in VurusScan 6 for XP (lost all my e-mail) DOUBLE GRRRR!

Had to use a command line to convert from FAT 32 to NTFS
That is not user frendly.....

I love my Windows, Linux, and Mac workstations. If I can't find something on one, I go to the other. Yeah, having a workstation for almost every possible OS and brand may seem a little expensive, but it's the perks of my job. I get first pick of left over PC parts. My whole living room is computers and the big screen TV for movies. Girlfriend hates it, but oh well :p

So, I'm a Windows/Linux/Mac lover. One of the few mutants that lurk this board I guess. I just need a 4th OS to add to my collection, some Unix workstations are starting to look good :D

Oh yeah, the topic, Windows XP runs just fine on the PIII450 256MB RAM workstation I have. I have to admit, I turned off about every pretty thing in the OS, was kind of odd after working on the neatly organized KDE or Win2k desktop.

And it runs like a dream.

Its got XP Plus! installed on it along with Office XP and there has been not one major problem with it yet. It runs faster than Windows 98SE did on the box, and a shitload faster than Windows NT did.

The only slight problem is that the searching for files or folders on XP sucks major ass.. for starters that dog is just annoying.. and I attempted to search a folder for a document containign the string INT 21h... every document in the folder had that string in it at least 12 times... it did not find it once...

EvilSeed, while the XP login screen kept me entertained for ohhh say 3 seconds, as soon as you join your copy of XP to a domain, it reverts to the good old Win2k login screen.

Also, to anyone who cares, if you don't like the XP login, you can press Control-Alt-Delete to switch it to the Win2K login. Although why you would want to do that rather than just type your password in I don't know.

Stupid point: When go to shutdown or logoff from XP, the screen fades to grey. When you actually click logoff or shutdown, the colour comes back into windows..

This is probably the reason behind lack of support for java in XP. Microsoft tried to make it so java wasnt the free multiplatform thing that sun had envisioned. By making visual j++ microsoft tried to make it so you had to have their OS to use their java applications.

OK....... I have a iMac with OS 9.2.1 and 10.1, 3 Linux base boxes, 2 ME Boxes, 1 98se Box and 2 W2K boxes as well as a number of boxes I maintain for customers..... Processor speeds from 60Mhz to 1.2 gigs and ram from 32 megs to 640 megs. Hard Dive space from 2.2 gigs to 80 gigs, totals... lost track of.....(grin)
Acess speed here is a Tier 3 ADSL (1.5 Mbs down and 512k up) static IP but several of my servers are on T3 backbones.... (Fun!!)

My personal experience - I am running XP and it runs beautifully. 1.3 GHZ, 128 megs ram. (Well, what would you expect. :D )

If you left the file system as FAT32 when you upgraded to XP, then that is probibly 99.9% of your problems. XP is essentially win2k with windowblinds, and a bit of 98 code (they brough back msconfig, yay). If any of you out there ran win2k on FAT32 you know what I'm talking about, its slow as hell and crashes a lot.
If your going to install XP, make sure you format your HD as NTFS, or you will be sorry.
