An Asus board to seat it all, a SoundBlaster live5.1 card (works great for me). If you have the money go with RAMBUS ram to really open the performance of the P4. Liquid cooling should not really be needed if you set it up correctly. With 2.66GHZ why bother to OC? For a video card I would suggest either the Radeon 9700 pro or the nVidia GeForece FX, and for a case I recommend Antec. Good luck.
Already got the above suggestions except for the RAMBUS...I'm sticking with the reliability of DDR - to cut down on the cost a bit...its only a difference of 66mhz.....but I have the Soundblaster 5.1 and the Radeon 9700 pro.....
...and Linux!!!
or... do you want it for games???
Fist off, what do you plan on doing with it?(gamming, compiling, processing?) two: What are your DVD and burner drives?(RAM, ROM, mix. CD-R(W)) Three: Go AMD, not P. They are less expensive, more effiecient, and offer higher performance regardless of the lower clock speeds. Example: AMD 1800x runs as well as a P4 2.4Gig.
This is mainly a gaming machine....the DVD is a 16x, the Burner is a 40x16X48..and money isn't really that much of an issue, so I'm sticking with the Pentium 4 266 so I can upgrade or overclock later
if your mainly into gaming goto www.madonion.com and download 3d mark 2001se it gives u a bench mark on your system the higher the better and will recommend graphics cards that will run better on your motherboard/chip configuration...im also in online gaming well i play counterstrike alot and most hardcore gamers swear by 3d mark its quite a big download ...i done it on my system and got a benchmark of 5000 but if i had a gf4 it would go up to 9000
hope this is of some help

whatever you get, check a hardware compatibility list for linux because chances are you will want to put it on eventually. better checking now than in x months time.
always think "upgradeability", if there is such a word. if you are going for 512mg DDR RAM, be sure this doesn't max out the motherboard! or there will be no upgrading :( get a good mobo, with rambus ram.
games machine eeh. it's been a year since i have been shopping for processors but last time i checked AMD chips were giving the highest frame rates. and i think dual processor boards were in development for amd's, so they should be out now. i'm thinking, get a dual processor board with one chip, save the other one for upgrading :) when they become cheaper.
make sure the mobo has AGP8x for the graphics card. lots of PCI (64bit 100Mhz) slots would be nice. and some creative sound device complimented with 3d surround sound speakers and extra bells. now i am going to pull you on this one,
why not get two 21" flatscreens? or eight Pioneer 61" Plasma screens? and an operating system. window~98 is supposed to use less systems resources than 2k, xp and is more stable than ME, so its good for games. but then you would be running window~98!Quote:

edit: can not believe i forgot this http://www.vapochill.com/default.asp...on=2&menuID=-1
AMD's overclock very well. Get an XP 1600 AGOIA/AGOGA from Newegg for $50 and you can make it hit 2GHZ with watercooling. you may want to check out www.overclockers.com for more... and running AMD system would save you atleast $200 on CPU alone, maybe motherboard as well.
Madonion.com is a joke. I had a 1GHz that out performed a 1.3GHz (both AMD), and the only thing that was different between the two computers was the amount of GHz's. Plus I have a friend who has a 2GHz and I have a 1.5GHz (both AMD again). This was all according to MadOnion's test results. I mean it looks nice, I like the tests it performs, but I honestly think people give that thing more credit than it's worth. It's a FREE product, how can you be sure something so FREE can be so COOL?
