Software (programs or data) that has been written onto read-only memory (ROM). Firmware is a combination of software and hardware. ROMs, PROMs and EPROMs that have data or programs recorded on them are firmware.
Firmware is basically a bios of device. Flashing Firmware been upgrading it like you upgrade a BIOS.
People "flash" their firmware to get rid of potiential security holes and to fix other bugs.
It is always a good idea to keep all your devices up2date. This includes switches and routers and any other network capable device. Even the firmware on your network print servers need to be updated. Have a network capable webcam? You need to keep that updated too.
You may also want to flash (update) your firmware so that it will support newer devices than it originally did........this is particularly true of the BIOS
How about those mp3players,cdrw drives to flash? to solve potentially bugs? but it seems that bugs occurs more on the software side rather than a mechanical or hardware device
You update the firmware on cdrw drives and mp3 players so they will work with the software you are having problems with.
