How can I check the security of my LAN??
here u go bud. It has a very detailed picture on how your lan should look like:
http://documents.iss.net/whitepapers...N_security.pdf
Its full of information and it will educate you on some of the terminology and how certain things work on a wireless LAN.
cheers,
thats a long read 10 pages, i will go throught them . and reak attack if you need more information you can always use www.google.com
http://www.google.co.in/search?q=sec...e+Search&meta=
http://www.google.co.in/search?hl=en...e+Search&meta=
the most useful information does not always come in short paragraphs. It seems that all you know how to do is google. Its about time you stopped spamming the Tech Hummor forums. Glad to have ya back. Besides....a quick advices for you wolverine...if you want something done right, you better spend the time and effort reading about it. Being too lazy to read 10 pages (Deduct 2 of them for Cover Page and Index) will not get you very far.
Cheers,
I wish more newbs knew how....Quote:

EDIT: I got it!!! I'm going to write a Google tutorial. For all the newbies out there.
Google tutorial:
www.google.com
1. Type stuff in box.
2. Get answer without useless posts.
3. That's it.

Brilliant..... One of the most succinct tutorials I have seen. It contains all the information required without extraneous "chit-chat". It should probably be made a sticky...... ;)
google.com....isn't a place where knowledgeable experts can divulge information that has proven to be useful...this is why we have a BBS..yes?
Are you looking for guides on how to make your LAN secure? Or are you looking for some sort of a program?
For a guide..I found this to be particularely useful:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1276349,00.asp
Although slightly general it still gives you alot of the basics.
And then for something a bit more in depth..if your not too bored for this..lol.
http://www.iss.net/wireless/WLAN_FAQ.php
For a book I personally like this:
http://www.linuxsecurity.com/article...icle-8885.html
Sadly...I haven't found a program that would do this..supposedly the US Federal Gov has it's own security audit proggy for WLANS..but thats the only thing I could find...lmao.
The only other thing I could suggest is try hacking your own WLAN and secure it..
Have fun with that lol..wlans can be pretty cool.
Well, to "toot my own horn" as they say- you can read Wireless Network Security For The Home . You can also find a lot of useful information on JiWire.com (I wrote a feature article for them which should post in the next week or two).
Aside from that, I would also recommend simply testing security the "old-fashioned way" by using something like Shields Up or Anonymizer to perform free penetration tests and give you some basic info on what the outside world can see.
It won't help you identify what someone using Kismet or NetStumbler can discover sniffing wireless packets from your driveway, but it will help you learn how secure your network is to the outside world as a whole.
Not so. Why wait a few minutes for people to type out a response when you could google it and get a result in 0.37 seconds?Quote:

A couple quick things to do if you haven't already. Change the defaults passwords and logins for your router. Check to see if your router supports WPA, and enable it if you have it. If you don't, you should at least have WEP. Also, as tronic said, why don't you just use a laptop to try and access it?
slick
Some one said "Better read long than short, so that we can improve our langugage."
The only thing I was reffering too..is the whole learning spectrum.
Ranking system:
0- Don't even know something exists.
1- Have an idea about something but don't know it's possible.
2- You have limited exposure to that thing.
3- You have a firm grasp on whatever it is. You can do whatever the task is with profficient ease.
4- Your a wizard. You can teach others, and modify the data so that someone else, thats not you, can understand what your saying. You can put it into terms that whoever is trying to learn whatever the subject is can understand with ease.
The problem with google and such search engines, is that it takes a string that it understands, lets say "BLUE" and searches with it's robots for all topics regaurding BLUE..that have that exact string in the sites it knows about..it searches through the meta keywords, etc etc.
Now..Lets say..BLUE and RED are related somehow..the user wants BLUE.
-By that search, how are you gaurunteed to find "BLUE" if the robots can't find it?
Now in this case..relate RED with WEP and BLUE with "the best encryption out there".
We here, as experts, can guide users from thinking of "the best encryption out there", to "WEP"..in other words....not only teach others in a better way, bring more hits to the site, but build an expert community that isn't thinking in terms of "WEP is the best encryption out there", but thinking "Why is WEP the best encryption out there? By your very thorough description it sounds pretty weak...". How will you find something on a search engine, if you don't know what "exactly" to look for? That is why google.com isn't the best choice all of the time. And, as a BBS that hosts an expert community, you will be sure that your getting good information, and not just some one page essay for a high school assignment about the basics of encryption for a computer science class. And people like to talk.
Not to flame or anything, but alot of people don't understand that... It's just logical, if you don't know what to search for then you won't find anything..
And..another question.
We need some more info...
The basics..of coarse, not setting your AP right..not changing admin pw etc etc. But, what type of equipment are you running as well? Alot of this depends on what your running. Some hardware vendors bundle in a security audit software to go through..but most don't.
We need to know more is all.
