Been a long time user of Sam Spade 1.14, primarily for whois inquiries. Their website (www.samspade.org) is down and I don't get any returns anymore on my ip inquiries via the app. No big deal, I just do online whois, but Spade was convenient.

The site says "back soon" but no indication of when the message was posted.
IIRC if you look at the top of the screen you will see a box with "MAGIC" in it?
Try changing that to Arin or whatever and see if it works.
I am guessing that "MAGIC" is some sort of compilation of domain registrars' information. It may be out of action or is now defunct.
Please do not forget that Spade 1.14 is 10 years old
HTH :)
That would depend on your dog, your computer, and what you use it for :D
Most of my kit is getting on for 10 years old and is perfectly adequate today. Having said that it was high end when I built it.
My Vista box is built with spares that were at least 8 years old apart from the 256MB video card.
I had another look at the SamSpade site and displayed the source. I found this:
I guess the old one reached its quota of dog years? :p:DQuote:
server died. Waiting on new hardware
From days of Windows XP when i started with Sam Spade. It is the first piece of software that gets installed on my machine - even before the AV or firewall.
On reflection I can see why the searches don't work as they are obviously conducted via the SamSpade website, and their server is down.
There was no indication of roughly when they expected to be up and running again.
Just out of curiosity, what was Sam Spade capable of that other whois websites didn't do?
Hi there Metguru,
A toolbox or compendium basically:
Ping
DNS Lookup
Who Is
IP Block
Dig
Traceroute
Finger
SMTP Verify
Web
Time
Blacklist
Abuse lookup
Scan Addresses
Crawl Website
Browse Web
Check Cancel
S-Lang Command
Decode URL
Parse e-mail headers
It saved a lot of hopping around from site to site :)
Thanks nihil,
I guess I didn't know what i was missing. And this was a downloadable tool? I've been to the website before, but all I've ever seen was the whois. I hope it comes back soon so I can look into this!
You are welcome metguru :)
If you want to download the application to have a look and be ready for when they commission their new server please go here:
