Job Hand Over?
I have recently got the job as an IT Administrator for a small company. I will be the only IT guy there. I had to take hand over from previous IT Administrator in next couple of days. Can anyone suggests me what is the exact procedure would look like, what information / documentation should I request from them or any other information which will be later necessary for the job.
Hopefully the person leaving is leaving on good terms... If so, he or she could be a real life saver.
Need to make sure you get passwords for everything....(so that you can change many to keep them out)
He or she should be able to tell you which machines need to be watched.
I'm sure others here will reply with additional info.. Stay tuned.
Don't forget to inquire about other systems that may be part of the job such as the telephone switch, muzak, door locks, etc. If the phone system is part of the job, make sure to get a list of all external connections as well as a list and map of all active and inactive internal phone drops.
My worst nightmare happened on my second day at a company when their phone switch hard drive crashed and nobody in the company had a current list of extensions, etc. I had to rebuild the database through trial and error after tracing 500 physical lines from the punch down panels. The only backup was made years before during the initial switch installation.

Documentation (Network Diagram, Manuals)

Clients (operating system, software packages)
Which services are running on which machine
Lan IP Address mappings

Password for all the systems (Network equipment, Firewall, Clients, Servers, PBX)
How the clients access MS Office Suite (publishing)

Supplier Contacts / preferred suppliers
If you are unable to solve any problem then what do you do
Do we deal with mobile devices
Are there any change control / management procedures
Are there any VPN connections or any one connects remotely to companys network
Please feel free to make additions and comments welcome.
Ask about off-site backup and storage.
Contingency plans, procedures, etc.
Along the lines of ua549:
1. Is there a disaster recovery plan?.......check how old it is, are the people named in it still working there, when it was last tested etc......
2. Key personnel in IT & suppliers:............who actually fixes things ;)
3. Key user personnel + contact. It sometimes happens that we have to make decisions out of hours that impact the business........better tell them first :halo:
4. Procedures for out of hours cover/remote monitoring.
