I did a little test myself. I had a WAV 35.602 Mb and encoded it to OGG VORBIS and MP3 formats (the same quality).

Hey man say what modem you use maybe I can help. I'm using those drivers and my modem works very well.
P.S.I'm using Conexant/Rockwell Data, Fax, Speakerphone modem. It's I guess 127a:1025.

All this sequence of actions is in README paper which comes with kernel source. ;)
