Why would they put X and lots of nice apps on if they don't expect anyone to use them?
I'm not so much complaining that FreeBSD won't work on my laptop - there are plenty of other OSes that will -...

gore,
I liked FreeBSD in the 4.x days. A pain to set up, but you only needed to do it once! Setting up the X driver timings manually was interesting, but I'm glad we don't have to do that any...

westin,
Now that you've forced me to think (never a good idea!), I'm a bit stumped. Realistically (email wise) a potential customer could come from anywhere. I agree that you could probably remove...

gore,
I used FreeBSD on a laptop for a couple of years during the 4.x phase, but when it all went horribly wrong when the 5.x series came out, I was somewhat put off. I tried again recently with a...

Hi Guys,
I see you're all complaining of it being quiet round here, so I'll give you something to do... help me! ;-)
I'm contemplating setting up multiple mail servers using zones/jails, and...

Just in case anyone is interested, it turns out that the Vyatta commercial edition DOES allow filtering by TCP flags. Unfortunately the community edition doesn't.

It looks as though firewalls aren't as granular as I thought - at least not the ones I'm looking at. I've ended up allowing all TCP packets out to that site. Oh well.

After doing a bit of digging I see that SYN packets are the first in creating a TCP handshake - although in this case it must be initiated by the web page loaded in my browser.
(This also assumes...

Hi again, guys.
I'm currently playing with several of the firewall distros and today came across a problem I don't know how to handle correctly.
I first noticed the issue with Endian (which has...

CTO,
Yes, that's the general idea; however you are correct, TG2's solution had a switch at the front which does create yet another SPF.
I have noticed that some of the h/w firewalls can be set...

Thanks for the article, TG2.
I was beginning to think it was me...!
Some of the firewall appliances have failover built-in, but I don't like the idea of paying $$$ annually just to keep the...

Now we're back to the single firewall problem...!
Actually, if the MTBF *is* 40 years as they quote, how do they manage to charge us hundreds of [insert local currency here] for a subscription for...

Thanks CTO, but from a customer point of view, I'm afraid that's not appropriate either.
The customer shouldn't need to know that when web.company.org is down due to firewall problems he needs to...

There will be web servers behind the firewalls, but they have their own redundancy. The important part is not losing protection and having service continuity if one firewall fails.
The initial...

Hi CTO,
I mean the firewalls are in parallel, not serial, so that if one does die the service isn't interrupted.
Thanks.

Hi all,
A few years since I last visited, but here I am with another dumb question...
I am looking to set up a high availability service from home, and of course want to keep the nasties out. I...

Mmmmh.
As good as it looks, I had to take it off in the end. It was stopping the AVG control center from loading automatically, too. Not just for me (where the bricopack was loaded), but for other...

Hi Guys.
I must have been bored today, coz I downloaded a vista-lookalike installer called a BricoPack for my XP box:

It looks great (includes...

OK, so I changed the example to try to prove a point ;)
The fact is that ClickBank have been using a business model similar to my original proposition for about nine years, and have some 100,000...

Hi Nihil, we meet again!
What do you think shopkeepers are? Why don't the public all contact the distributors direct, and miss out the MITM? Because they like to wander into a shop and see...

You want me to get all the world's online shops with affiliate programs to change their sites to read a cookie I set?
I'm sure you're trying to be helpful, but you obviously don't understand the...

oofki, I think you're still struggling with the concept...
The affiliates post their adverts on their sites, or Google, or wherever. The adverts are to bring customers to OTHER people's web sites...
-
I'm the one providing the links to the affiliates.
The problem with the method you mention is that the affiliate has to trust the web site owner to be honest. The owner gets all the business, and...

To use clickbank as an example:
Affiliates (advertisers) and sellers both sign up for the service. I provide the affiliate with a link which will send a potential customer (via me) to the seller's...

I am thinking of setting up a service (something along the lines of clickbank) which involves the redirection of web requests. What I want is for a customer's request to come through me, which I will...
