I copied it to my home dir.
cp /usr/bin mc /home/rcgreen/mcedit
then
./mcedit
(runs editor!)
like you said, the program checks first arg (its own name,by which it was

I looked for an alias or an environment variable
to explain it but no such luck.
I guess the people who created these links
know something that I don't.

I get:
#ls -l mcedit
