I have and they are fun....I would call them a brother to the port knocker....Definitely are usefull in most situations. However, it would be easily engineered to create a worm to telnet/ssh combo...

What I would do is have the virii run in a virtual environment, with a sniffer on the nic tracking all of the traffic in/out on the card, and have the gateway firewall drop all incoming/outgoing...

I would do a test batch........comparing upgrade to fresh install.....then compute the total cost of "upgrade/installation" and then pick from there....I'm thinking upgrade wouldn't be much cheaper...

I wouldn't worry too much about the user playing with the bios.......it isn't*should not be* as easy as pressing F2 to randomly change your bios settings...
