You rarely come across a router that doesnt support snmp.
Install mrtg if ofcourse, snmp is available.

you probably would want to reinstall grub and check if that works. just boot into rescue mode using your media and use grub-install /dev/hdb.

I normally use ipfw (iptables) under bsd. I think thats the most configurable and it being very cheap..lol.
