maybe your modem is a winmodem and if so it dosent work in linux
go www.linmodems.org

I use dual boot with win xp and redhat 8.0
i installed lilo as bootloader and i configured it and it works fine
If u cna't boot in redhat with floppy than check those amibios features and tell...
