If you have a low connection via dial up, why dont you try Opera ?
Its a very fast browser (faster then any version of Internet Explorer or Netscape),
it has it own integradet download manager...

I never experienced problems while using Windows XP firewall and the one from Sygate.
By the way, the XP firewall isnt good, it only blocks incoming comunications,
