What's your current config-register status ? 0x2102 boots the config in the nvram where 0x2142 boots into the setup mode and it will deny any config in the nvram at that moment. My assumption it...

Sometimes apache can be configured if it doesn't found an index-page it refuses to show a dir tree.

It could be he wants to implement a firewall and/or a VPN security gateway to secure homeworkers and such. And since local ranges aren't routable over the internet and NAT can be a pain to vpn's...

Normally it should be. Mac OS(X) is only architecture specific aka PowerPC processors.
All other hardware should be exchangable and usable, IF you use other filesystems as reiserfs, ext3 and others...

If you need a firewall on your existing box, if you don't have a spare box, I'd recommend iptables with shorewall, cause shorewall is easy to configure and learns you to handle iptables.
