Make sure you get permission first, but nessus is a very good overall testing tool and provides many different options. On top of that its freeware.

Personally I use a program called DBAN. Available for free from http://dban.sourceforge.net/
It allows all kinds of different wipes including DOD and GUTMANN wipes.
