Check for hidden files. That would cause the data to disappear, without showing up in standard file recovery searches. I've seen similar forms of malware recently.

Yes, just keep a single direction of airflow. Maybe out the top and in everywhere else, or out the back and in everywhere else.

Make sure fans are pointed in useful directions.
Intake in front, output in back. I'd make sure the PSU fan is pushing air out the back and not into the case.

IF you have anything encrypted or tied into the password, you need to break it rather than resetting it... think of a keychain on OS X... Same concept.

There are hundreds of applications that can break the password, but unless you *need* to break it, I'd suggest either bypassing it or resetting it.
