    I am currently running Windows 2000 SP4 and also Windows Server 2003 on my laptop.
    Why not XP? XP is not a bad OS. XP has NT 5 kernel like 2000 and 2003. XP kernel is little improved...

    Truecrypt

    Truecrypt supports *nix since version 4. I use it for a long time on Windows boxes so I'd guess it is good for Linux too.
