Try reinstalling NIS. This kind of thing is often solved by reinstalling. Also, NIS uses up a lot of resources. Were you running many programs at the time?

I installed IE7 after the problem. Recently too. I installed SP2 way back when it first came out.

Think of it as a file cabnet. It keeps the system and its files organized. Different file systems have different ways of organizing your files.

Actually, by crippled they mean that the companies took some of the features out the pro versions and made it the free version. One example is the Zonelabs ZoneAlarm free version you mentioned.

Personally, I like ZoneAlarm. Few years ago, I tried a whole bunch of free firewalls. My favorites were Kerio and ZoneAlarm. Try them one at a time... maybe you might...
