I've used Winternal's File Recover on more that one occasion to save deleted files. Anyone interested in file recovery might want to check it out as well. Unfortunately it isn't a free tool.

If you are new to Linux you might want to try Mandrake. I've had pretty good luck with it detecting most things. I think its a good starting point for newbies.
Knoppix is great! I even booted it...

I've just recently started learning Linux and am looking at Perl as a scripting language for administrative tasks. It would be nice to be able to use the same language for my Linux and win boxes.
