Correct. Not only during the install though. The format option when Windows XP is booted does the same thing, it does NOT wipe the drive.

Modern hard disks have a 'spare' bit of room to map bad sectors to. If bad sectors start showing up it means that spare room is full and the drive needs to be replaced.

You've done all you can. Just make sure the key you use is sufficiently long and random.
