I'm not a fan of Unity, the standard in Ubuntu. I'm running Lubuntu it is great for older and lower end equipment. Kubuntu is Ubuntu with a KDE interface. All the features of Ubuntu without Unity.

Have you run a boot time scandisk on the drive? There may be a flaky sector or 2. Does the computer make any extra noises while the drive is active?

I have to think about this but I think the problem is in the fact that you have built 2 separate lans with private IPs and private IPs by nature don't forward.
