    Depends what you want to do, but the Ad-aware program from Lavasoft www.lavasoftUSA.com seems pretty good for Windows platforms. The freeware version doesn't stop ads appearing, but it does take a good look at your registry & cookies etc. to see if advertisers have left anything on your PC. Doubleclick being the most notorious offender of course!
