    Question index.dat

OK: Here goes another of my newbie questions. I have norton clean sweep to help clean my puter junk. I manually clean out internet files and cookies. (WIN 98SE). Here is my Q: How do I open (index.dat) in my cookie file and where else does win98 store surf trash? Thanks, always....

.The index.dat file can only be deleted in DOS and are included in your cleanup using the DELTREE command.

I suggest you go here for step by step instrusctions.

Hey: Adore, thanks for the links, I am now in the process of building a DOS toolkit. But, once again how do I open the index.dat file and where else does IE store surf data?
in DOS (dir index.dat?) or something like that?

jiffyprogasm, the basic DOS command to show the contents of a file is type.

type index.dat will do the trick. edit index.dat is the same, but with a GUI...
Also check out debug index.dat. At the command line, type d to dump the file contents on screen. (Repeat as often as necessary ).

I don't know why you want to 'open' index.dat in DOS, though... Using Wordpad in Windows will get you exactly the same...

Last but not least: one of the AO-members (Markus Jannson) has some info on his site about index.dat: http://www.markusjansson.net/eienbid.html

Excellent post negative: I never realized that the wordpad would open the index.dat. I continue to learn at every visit to the site, thanks AO's
