Thread: computer screw-ups

    Cool

    When I first got Windows 3.1 way back when...and I didn't know much about comps, and _nothing_ about windows...
    I went through and deleted every file that didn't seem to be obviously doing something. "For more Room"
    This included anything that wasn't hidden or read only...which, as it turns out, includes several important files.

    i tend to think that screwing up is the best way to _quickly_ learn anything on computers! that way you lose the fear of screwing up....

    worst thing i did was when i first got a used system- an old win95 box. i was cleaning out all the garbage, moving in, and i'm saying to myself "bin?!? what's that? well, guess i'll just delete it..."
    :-)

    boy, didn't i learn FAST. much better now, thanks.

    Unhappy

    I was installing a new DVD drive on my PC, I got it working fine and was about to close the box when I decided to rearange some decided to rearrange some of the hardware inside. Everything was fine until I booted up, realised I had been using a magnetic screwdriver and had corrupted my harddrive. Stupid.

    It bought a tear to my eye...

    i have had quite a few screw ups before. I have put proccessors in backwards and wonder why the computer never booted up. Just last month i blew all the PCI slots on one of my motherboards because i forgot to take off a standoff that was not needed under the motherboard. I have blown a couple hard drives, deleted files, when i was a real newbie, that i thought weren't important. I learned not to touch the keylock after you walk across the carpet, and make sure the power is unpluged before you play take it all apart.

    And always remember to make sure everything is plugged in and working before you put the case back on

    Most hackers and any computer people will agree that you can't really learn anything yourself(which is the only way to learn well) without destroying your computer once or thirty times. It is a guarantee in the learning process and sooner or later you should end up asking how and why and how to fix it. Its absolutely natural, I mean how can you know how to fix a broken computer if you've only broken it once or twice? You have to ask the first few times.
    A buttered piece of bread always lands butter side down;
    A cat always lands on its feet;
    A cat with a buttered piece of bread strapped to its back hovers feet above the ground in a state of quantum indecision

    Red face

    Everyone wants to be the master of there domain ( computer ) but Ive learned that no one will be the great and all powerful for the fact that there is way to much to learn. Like they said If you really want to learn dont be afraid open up your program files and see whats in there and oh well if your computer crashes just make sure you have your system ghosted first, then no harm is done.

    tell you the truth I never made a real mistake that I couldnt fix or find a fix for it, But one time I did lose all my sound files woops. worst 8 hours of my life trying to fix it, I love my tech support. LOL

    Apart from using deltree on my father work computer when I started exploring DOS in the good old days. I´ve made loads of stupid things.. and I don´t stop.. I thought that I would have a go at the windows registry two days ago. Yesterday my computer could not find win.com (and a heck load of other files) Trial and error is what it´s al about. I just wish that (s)winedos would take less time to install.
    Dear Santa, I liked the mp3 player I got but next christmas I want a SA-7 surface to air missile
