Is 16.4 GB big enough for Red Hat 7.1

Ok well I want to move linux on to my baby, but since I have a winmodem becuase it's a gateway I wouldn't be able to get online. But I was wanting to use a compiler I got it's for linux and my 486 for some reason won't take it. Probably out of memory.

I have been having touble with Windows, everytime I go to partion it says it needs 19468 worth of space for windows which is like the full limit of my computer. I go up to the C:\ drive and it says I'm only using about 2 gigs of hard drive space. And that I have about 16.4 gigs of space avaliable.

Now I'm using the Partition that comes with Red Hat Linux 7.1 is there a way to tell windows to use only 4 gigs and give the rest to linux. Also could someone give step by step instructions, maybe I'm missing somthing. I've gone to links, and looked for instructions but can't seem to get it right. The only way to install linux is to delete windows. Which I'm not going to do because of all my school work. Could someone help me out

If you install Linux Mandrake 8 i believe you can resize your windows partition without losing the data on it... plus the install is self-explanatory.

In fact, mandrake 7 and 7.1 have that feature as well... and all versions of Linux should come with a DOSTOOLS directory with a program called FIPS which will (if i recall correctly?) resize your partition without loss of data!

If you want a step-by-step Linux installation instruction, I suggest you either buy a boxed version of Linux (come with manuals therefore install instructions) or download the instructions from the distribution's web site, e.g. www.linux-mandrake.com

    Hope that helped!

I'm not sure about your patitioning problem but I know you can get drivers for winmodems at Olitec. Try this link-http://www.olitec.com/pci56kv2.html

It's written in French but it's not hard to understand.

    Good luck!

Hey I can't get the driver for this WinModem already looked. Besides all gateway computers come with some type of winModem, there a partner ship with the Microsoft Corporation.

I do own the box set. The instructions are what I was following. Redhat.com wants you to register to have access to the instructions, but since I threw the box away long ago I don't have the reg.number. box = registration # = instructions
Well I am looking for better instructions, an easy to understand version.

If you have a link to partioning with Win98 it would be great to know. Or even giving me step=by=step examples.

um... have you read the documentation in the fips directory that should be located in the dostools dir on the install CD?
