If you're going to play games, you don't have to worry quite so much about people cheating on some online games... although at the last LAN-party I was at, a guy from school kept saying I must be cheating (I was dominating on the Counter-Strike maps)... I invited him to swap computers after he wouldn't shut up about it, and he replied: "No, because I don't want to be a cheater."
So I'd say there's an additional element of trust and perhaps politeness, in that people tend to be nicer when they are in the same room than when they are a continent away. It's harder to be insulting, since if the guy on the other end *IS* built like Schwarzenegger, he *can* come over and give you a piece of his mind. :P

Forget going all the way to Ireland, why not just do a WAN party? It will be the same as a LAN party, only we'll have higher pings, and we won't actually see each other. PARTY!!!

Meeting Sebastos? I can't wait (sarcasm)
We could visit some historical buildings?
I like the trust thing mentioned by Terr.
In my writing I spoke about competition without anonimity so I could implement Terr's idea.
Terr: can I quote you in a writing?

<shrugs> Sure, fine, as long as you don't quote it like this:
So I'd say there's an additional element of --a --ss --, in that people tend to be --i --d --i --o --t --S -- :P
