80386 is the Intel 386 processor
i386 is an indication of the kind of platform / processor you are working with. like i386 / Alpha / ...
i386 --> it means, like said before by chsh, that it's designed for the instructions for a Intel 80386 compatible or higher.

Who cares?
when referring to an Intel based machine there is allways indeicated in the installation software i386.
Everybody knows it stands for Intel. Don't be such a smartass Debris.
