    Question identify ISP location

My firewall has alerted a couple of times of a non familiar IP address
trying to connect thru a wrong port. I have the IP how can I find out
    who owns the address?

I know they are recorded somewhere but not sure where.

It depends what OS you are using. If you are using Windows I would recommend using Neo Trace Express. It's very simple to use and even better, it's free!

Neo Trace will give you all the info you're looking for and even an "abuse" email address. Copy the intrusion attempt log and forward it to the abuse address.

    Good Luck.

    Re: ISP location

Use some service on the net to find the owner / location of an IP (mostly IP ranges)
    here are some:
    www.samspade.org
    www.ripe.net

link to the ripe WHOIS database

Well if you are running windows you can use neotrace like blueline said or you can just open dos prompt and type tracert ipyouwanttraced. To find out what isp they are using go to the following links:

American Registry for Internet Numbers: www.arin.net
    Reseaux IP Europeens:www.ripe.net
    Network Solutions:www.networksolutions.com
    Asia Pacific Network Information Center:www.apnic.net
