Got to love Mozilla - this little feature blocks about 95% of all pop-up ads. I think this is what's blocking JP's new 'hey-you-have-a-PM-go-have-a-look' pop-up dialog too, but hey, it's worth it :)

One way to get rid of popups is to disable java but it also makes alot of web pages suck!

surely you mean disable javascript...surely you know that java and javascript are not the same...surely it's a typo...

Sorry Guus. It's a one pixel bug in their pictures at CNN.

Oblio's right about the revenue thing. If it weren't for advertisements, a lot of these sites you take for granted wouldn't be available for free, or wouldn't even exist. If you don't want to deal with them, though, try Intermute. I tried it when I ran Windows, and it's great. It's not freeware, so you'll have to pay for the full version. I think it's worth it, though.

Someone gave me negative points claiming that popup ads violate privacy. Obviously this person doesn't know what privacy is. Popups violate your privacy only to the extent of vulnerabilities in your browser or perhaps cookies and not even cookies truly violate your privacy. Popup ads are a nuissance no doubt but they do not have anymore capabilities then the parent window. If popups violate your privacy then the entire hyper text transport protocol violates your privacy. Popup ads are what allow the internet to remain a free and open market.

Oh and stflook you are right, you couldn't have said it any better than I did. Partially because you are an idiot and me well I am not.

Pop ups are annoying, especially when a site gives you one every time you click a stupid link or the sites that give you 10,000. I have one pop up on my site. It's used on one page and if you accept the cookie you'll only see it once a week. I use it for a newsletter sub box and an affiliate ad. It's really done quite well. I guess it's all the newbies who actually look at them LOL.

What is that 1 pixel bot? I've never heard of that before.

Your both absoultly right. advertising is a cheap price to pay for SOME of the stuff we get, And Audio-Galexy is one of my favorites, i also like kazaa(i know morphious has more music, blah, blah blah).

    BUT

as long as we accept this kind of behavior from advertising companys its just going to get worse. if we could put a stop to intrusive ads, and the grabbing of personal information, it wouldn't hurt ANYBODY. producers of goods would still advertise but in a more mundane way. they would pay just as much for it as they did before and life would go on.

If one company uses a pop-up, all the others panic, 'their beating us' so they all use it. If nobody could use them, it would still be the same game.

billboards on the highway got compleatly out of hand and became an abomination to nature and human dignity. this was stoped. no one got hurt, and the world is a better place.

    Thumbs up

That's why you gotta love Opera 6.0 - it has a simlpe feature which blocks all pop-ups. If you need to enable them for such tasks like assigning AntiPoints (where a pop-up appears) then you just simple make a couple of mouse-clicks and it's enabled. It's a very thoughtful feature - I like it!!
