    Post dba licensing question

for an unclustered sql 7 /2000 server - it remains inactive unless one of the other ones (across) wan link goes offline.
set to manual start, log shipping in effect, and regular dumps.

ok now to the question - does this server have to have its own license to run or can it operate (legally) with one of the paid msdn subs while running in the inactive state?

    thks

    Two theories on this.

    1. Better safe than sorry, ie ask the vendor.

    2. It's easier to apologize that to get permission. ie go for it
and if they complain, you apologize.

Yeah, they may be hard nosed, "you got three machines,
    you need three licenses"
Or maybe they'd see it your way, "you're only running
two at any given time, and besides we already have enough
    money".

Ok so we have the answer now. MSDN distr would be ine except it is limited to (5) user conex so we have to buy a full server license for this box and the cals necessary.

booooo. I'm not surprised- oh well I guess we're funding Bill's charity program right?
