earlier today got a certificate expired/not installed java notification when trying to start the java client...
and now
java lang.classnotfoundexception: chat class

Sounds like a problem with your local machine. Probably something with your certifications in IE/Netscape/whatever. I didn't have any problem with it. You probably have to reinstall the Java Runtime Environment on your boxen.

Are you guys not using mIRC becouse you're at work?
Download it here and then add the AO channel.
irc.antionline.com, it will automatically drop you in the channel on connection.
Don't mind me, it's all personal preferences, I just really like an irc client over a java client anyday.

Java chat has worked fine for days for me, including yesterday and today. (and I use mIRC primarily and it works fine also).
