how can you protect DIRECTORIES/FOLDERS from access?
there is a couple of ways i know like using alt+0255 directory and the other is to zip them with password, but is there some way to protect folders using like just passwords or encryption etc in win98 or would i have to use some softwares.
if there are some softwares could you please tell some..

u can make your folders secure very well... well if u are using some key combinations with
alt+ then that is some basic security ok .. that is if some dummies are around your box
then your folders are secure..
but if u are among some good computer wizes ..then this don't work..
one way of securing it is PGP ( pretty good piracy )
this is a software which will make some space on your disk and u can lock that space,
with your folders inside , with an encrypted password .... and hence can secure them...
search for PGP at google.com or just try pgpd.com .. or something ..because i am not sure
about the site .. but i am sure u will get it at google.com..
all the best...

What kind of an answer is that? "There is something that works but, not very well and I don't know what it is....." Brilliant.........
As everyone as mentioned, encryption is the answer! A product I use and recommend is Best Crypt. You can download it here. It also comes with a secure deletion tool that securely overwrites sensitive data, as well as swap files and free space. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's not freeware. But hey, you get what you pay for!
If buying software isn't for you than Ghost 25inf has given out the address to the best freeware site in the world........WebAttack.......

ummmm...that's privacy...not piracy...hehe...funny typo though...
i have used several win9x freeware shareware progs for folder security...(the only one i can remember right now was called folderguard) and most of them are ok to stop casual folder access...but all of them could be defeated by booting in safe mode...and i think from command prompt boot too...
the only real solution other than encryption is an os that supports object based permissions...and win9x just doesn't cut it for security under any condition...
