    *nix from windows

just downloaded and installed cygwin. i am so friggen pleased, duel boots are such a pain in the arrse! now i can start a unix shell while running my win2k box. just like starting a DOS shell. also works on 9x, xp, everything but ce. has gcc and all libs.

for those who would like to run nix but would rather not have the trouble that usually goes with it, or just want to try it out:

    Thumbs up

It can be really nice if your school uses windows 2000 and visual studios so you can run and compile all your programs in vi.

Pleased your happy but I have to disagree with the pain in the ass comment. I've been running a dual boot box for quite some time now with lilo managing the boot process. Never had a problem with it. You wouldn't even know it's a dual boot box untill you you insert the lilo boot floppy....

Anyway, enjoy your new nix system! (Or should I say "shell").....

I have Cygwin an I like it. You can open a BASH
window, execute dos, win progs from it,
in addition to all the unix type stuff.
Great for someone who wants to learn
    bash without leaving windows.

But you could also dual boot a full unix
once you're comfortable with your level
    of unix skill.
I came in to the world with nothing. I still have most of it.

I would rather run everything *inx but we cant all have our way.
Thats when this program comes in handy for big unix nerds who "have" to work with dreadfull windows.

Nothing beats a real *nix box.
instead of dual booting I think it's alot better to just
go out and get another computer 1:windows and 1:linux,cant beat that.

About to install, it, and I have a question: Is it just a shell, or does it use UMSDOS so that you can download packages for it? I should also mention Zipslack in this thread, it's a linux shell that boots from dos. www.slackware.com
