    HD sounds?

My HD has been making noises lately its only 2 months old but it sounds like its kicking the bucket. It would be going out on me this quickly would it? There is no sign of lag on my computer and everything is defaged and running smooth but the hard drive sounds like its sending moris code. Freeking gateway piece of garbage. whats that in moris code? Oh wait thats what my HD is saying.... Info please.

Well, I'm not sure what the problem with the HD would be, but bottom line is, it's under warranty (hopefully - it's a Gateway, should be) and you can return it and get a new one. Don't blame Gateway, they are actually very good (to me anyways ), you should give em a call and I'm sure they'll exchange it no problems.

My old computer was a Gateway and after like 4 years, the monitor went pink! Yup, it went all pink. Anyways, my warranty was only for 3 years, so I thought I might have to buy a new monitor. But, I gave Gateway a call and they said to just send them the monitor and they'll send me a new one. So I sent it away and like 5 days later, I got a new monitor - and it was the NEW MODEL!! I was bloody happy and my opinion of Gateway has been very good since then. Unfortunately, they have left the Australian market, but your in the US, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Well, First I would open the box and make sure the noise is coming from the HD and not a fan or something. After that (with win9x) run Scandisk and do a surface scan. That will test the drive for physical damage. Finnaly goto this page:

    http://www.gateway.com/support/techd...82825716.shtml

Use the scan utility. It will issue the read command to all the sectors on the drive giving you an opportunity to hear the drive for a while.

    Hope that helps a bit.

My HD makes some small beep-type noises, normally during access... It is quite quiet, and I consider it a warning that something is writing / reading to disk a lot... One of my HDs had some little blinking light or something, but I had no clue what it meant... The light was on the bottom of the HD, and would randomly blink brightly everyonce in a while... I thought the computer was short-circuting and I imagined sparks flying out of it... Imagine my suprise to find that little light...

My moniter is also going pink everyonce in a while, but Gateway isn't where I got it from... The pinkness switches on and off sometimes, and may be slightly pink, or the whole thing turns reddish...

Also, does anybody notice any changes in noise level when the computer is under heavy load or something? My PC has a loud fan, and/or the case vibrates a lot, but when I max the CPU for a short time or so, the PC either becomes very quiet, or becomes noticably louder... The changes are temporary, and after a second or two, it goes back into a normal noise making state...

I'm guessing our HDs sound the same at times, with the little beeping/click noise thing... Maybe it is related to that thing with the MODEM's lights sending out the data that is currently going through it... All I know is my HDs been doing it for a long time, and I just have to listen to find out if stuff is being written/read/etc...
